The Laboratory Challenge
The laboratory is the diagnostic backbone of any hospital. Yet many labs still rely on paper requisitions, manual result entry, and fragmented communication with clinical departments.
NileByteCare’s laboratory module transforms lab operations with a complete digital workflow.
Digital Lab Workflow
1. Test Ordering
Clinicians order lab tests from within the clinical encounter:
- Search lab catalog by test name, code, or category
- Set priority (Routine, Urgent, STAT)
- Add clinical notes for the lab
- Multiple tests can be ordered at once
Orders appear instantly in the lab worklist.
2. Lab Worklist
The lab worklist provides a complete view of pending orders:
- Filter by category (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.)
- Filter by priority (STAT orders appear first)
- Filter by date, ordering clinician, patient
- Sample collection status tracking
3. Sample Management
- Print specimen labels with barcodes
- Track sample collection time
- Sample rejection with reason documentation
4. Result Entry
Technicians enter results in a structured interface:
- Numeric results with normal range display
- Out-of-range values highlighted (high/low)
- Text results for culture, pathology, and qualitative tests
- Attachment of PDF reports and images
- Notes in English and Arabic
5. Result Sign-Off
Results go through a quality control sign-off process:
- Results must be signed off by an authorized reviewer
- Password verification for sign-off
- Audit trail of who entered and who signed off
- Unsigned results are clearly marked
6. Result Delivery
Once signed off:
- Notification sent to ordering clinician
- Results appear in the patient’s encounter
- Results added to the patient’s permanent EMR
- Abnormal results trigger clinical alerts
Lab Catalog Management
System administrators manage the lab test catalog:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name (EN/AR) | Test name in both languages |
| Code | Unique test identifier |
| Category | Hematology, Chemistry, etc. |
| Normal Range | Reference range for result interpretation |
| Unit | Measurement unit (mg/dL, IU/L, etc.) |
